Chateau Le Clos du Notaire, Bourg

Chateau-Le-Clos-du-Notaire.jpgThe estate is located on the hills overlooking the confluence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers.  Le Clos du Notaire started out as a small family vineyard which the wife of Maitre Menard (a Notary) inherited in the mid-19th century.  His son-in-law Maitre Henri Coutin (also a Notary) in turn inherited the estate and was followed by his son.  Over time the estate became known as the "Cru du Notaire" (vineyard of the Notary).  In the 1950s it was so named officially.  In 1974 the estate was taken over by Sylvette and Roland Charbonnier who have since restructed the vineyards and modernized many aspects of it.

One criteria which makes the chateau stand out is the diversity of its soil. The soil is mainly composed of iron-rich gravel over fossil limestone. Limestone retains moisture in dry weather and provides good drainage in cool periods. Many of France's greatest wines derive from grapes grown on limestone which provides sweeter grapes and excellent nutrients to grapes in general. But limestone lacks iron. It is the combination of limestone and iron in the soil which produces the greatest wines. The combination brings richness, power, depth and complexity to the wines and a concentration which enables the wines to mature and age very well for many years to come.

The estate encompasses 21 hectares with two distinct plots of land:  The "Le Clos du Notaire" with 15 hectares and a terroir which is mainly composed of gravel on clay-limestone.  The "Notaris Grand Reserve" with 5 hectares and a terroir of iron-rich gravel over asteria fossil limestone.  "Le Clair du Notaire" is made from young wines grown in varying places and constituting about 1 hectare from which the rose wine is made.  The average age of the vines is about 30 years with the oldest vines dating form 1956.  Merlot is the main grape variety grown, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.  Fifty percent of the Grand Reserve wine is aged in new French oak barrels while a lesser percentage of barrel ageing is used for the Clos du Notaire wine.

While the taste of the wines vary depending upon the vintage, they are of a deep dark colour, have lightly toasted aromas in their youth and complex, ripe fruits bouquets after they matured. They are full bodied, intense and powerful on the palate but with well-rounded tannins.
