Chateau Michel de Montaigne

Montaigne-Dumonstier.jpgThe Chateau Michel de Montaigne is located in the village Saint Michel de Montaigne in the prefecture of Dordogne close to Bergerac.  It is here that the famous French writer, thinker, philosopher and humanist was born in 1533 and died, aged 59 in 1592.  The chateau has been rebuilt several times, the last time in 1885 when much of it was destroyed by a fire. Only the tower where Michel de Montaigne lived, studied and worked remains as it was during his time.  The tower is classified as an historic 14th century monument. The chateau and estate is now owned and lived in by the Maehler-Besse family, reputed negotiants in Bordeaux.

The vineyard of the chateau is comprised of 20 hectares. Although, for administrative reasons, the appellation is located in the South-West region, geologically and climatically the terroir on the high plateau, where the chateau's vineyard is located, is a continuation of the hills of the Saint-Emilion and Castillon appellations which are part of the Bordeaux region. The soil of the terroir is made up of the same famous limestone formation which prevails in these two appellation. In turn this enables the chateau to produce classic Bordeaux style wines of great quality.   1280px-Chateau_de_Montaigne.jpg Red wine grapes grow on 16 hectares and white vines on four hectares.  About 40% of the red wine grapes grown are Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.  For the white wines, 95% of the grapes are Sauvignon Blanc and 5% are Semillon.  The wines are produced in traditional ways and aged about 18 months in French oak barrels.  While the red wines are accessible after 3-5 years, they will continue to improve and reach their full maturity after 8-20 years, depending upon the vintage.  The white wines are accessible much earlier but will also improve if kept for a few years.montaigne-estatua.jpgThe famous "magic" statue of Michel de Montaigne was made by the sculptor Paul Landowski in 1933 to celebrate Michel Montaigne's 400 years anniversary. The original statue, placed facing the Sorbonne University, was made of white marble. For some reasons it acquired the reputation that touching the feet of the statue and saying "Salut Montaigne" would ensure good examination results. Over time the statue suffered all sorts of pranks and deteriorations requiring regular repairs. In 1989 the city of Paris decided to replace the original statue with a bronze copy which would more easily withstand the wear and tear of times.
