Vintage notes

2014 - Bourgogne Chablis : 9 / 10 (excellent)

After three difficult years 2014 was an excellent vintage. Flowering started early, May and June was dry and stable, July was cool and rainy. Late August and September weather was perfect, sunny and warm during the days and cool at night. The berries were healthy, clean and fully ripe, with perfect acid levels and rich flavours. An excellent and classic year for a great Chablis.

Domaine Sebastien Dampt, Milly-Chablis

For over 150 years the Dampt family has grown and produced Chablis on their estate of 30 Hectares. Half of it are 1er Cru Chablis i.e. “Vaillons”, “Lys”, “Fourchaume”, “Côte de Leche” and “Beauroy” while the other half is Chablis AOP. The three Dampts (father Daniel and his sons Sebastien and Vincent) work together yet each of them also produces his own Chablis under his own domain name.

concrete-egg-sebastien-dampt_resize.jpgSebastien Dampt studied Oenology in Beaune (Burgundy) and trained at various estates in the area fwhich was followed by work in Australia. He established his own domain in 2007 on the 6 Hectares which he inherited. He farms his grapes organically on the calcareous clay containing Kimmeridgian limestone and marlstone with fossilized marine organisms that have made Chablis so famous. He created and built his own winemaking facilities and which includes a sophisticated concrete egg which is known to round out and provide a fatter taste to wines. It is also known to provide micro oxygenation but without oaky aromas.

Despite his young age Sebastien Dampt has a long experience crafting excellent Chablis, having lived and worked since being a child in doing so. In 2016 his 2014 1er Cru “Côte de Lechet” was accorded the Silver Medal at the “Concours des Vins de Chablis 2016 for the best 1er Cru Chablis. A huge achievement for such a still young winemaker.
